And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why are You talking with her?” The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 2“Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” 30 Then they went out of the city and came to Him. 31 In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” Therefore, the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.
John 4:27-34
This encounter with this woman has a seemingly dramatic effect on Jesus, also. With his disciples’ return, they urge him to eat. He refused the food but remained on mission, using food as an object lesson. The disciples wondered if someone had brought him food as he explained that he had food that they didn’t know about (verse 32). His food was “to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work” (verse 34). His mission with the Samaritan woman satisfied Him, as He had done what he had been prompted by His Father to do.
This passage is a clear reminder that our refreshing also comes from doing the will of God. As we engage in His will, doing what He says, we are refreshed.
PRAYER: Jesus, I appreciate the reminders of your refreshing. I thank you that it comes not only from my connection to you, but it can also come from my connection to others. Finally, thank you for the reminder that I also get refreshed when we I do the will of the Lord. Thank you for refreshing me, and I ask for the grace to walk in such intimacy with you that I receive constant refreshment from you, so that I can refresh others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
