I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.
Psalm 89:1
The school year has come to an end. I still remember the excitement of ending one year and looking forward to the upcoming year. For me, summer meant planting and harvesting crops, taking a small trip here or there, and REVIVAL MEETINGS…
If any of you grew up in the country and attended a Baptist church, you probably totally understand what I am talking about. In rural communities around the country, Baptist churches have historically had summer revival meetings. While I think I took for granted the worship experience as a child, there were some things I learned that I still lean on. One of those things is the songs that carried our people through some dark times. I think I took it for granted that the worshippers that graced our churches during revival meetings had probably already worked a full-time job, had come home and fed their families and prepared for tomorrow, and STILL came to church to praise God. Many of them were poor, but they found peace and solace worshipping their God.
Over the next two weeks, we will also worship our God, looking closely at some of my favorite songs while paying homage to those men and women who served Him during difficult times. I hope to remind us about how good God has been to us as a people, and I hope that we will gain strength and peace as we face today’s difficulties.
PRAYER: Lord, this passage reminds me of the song that you have placed in our hearts. Over the next two weeks, let me use these songs to praise you and to be mindful that you are not just my God. You have been faithful throughout all generations. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
