OBEDIENCE

Take heed, and hearken, O Israel; this day thou art become the people of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt therefore obey the voice of the Lord thy God, and do his commandments.

Deuteronomy 27:9-10

We live in a time when there can be a palpable rebellion to the laws of God. As humans in the Western world, we tend to determine which of God’s laws we will obey. We assume that we are doing well to do whatever we want, as long as we don’t hurt anyone.

Then, others of us may struggle with grace overdose. We take part of the scripture and decide that God’s grace is a license to do whatever we please. We look at scriptures like Romans 7 where Paul describes life without the Spirit of God, and use it as ammunition to explain away our humanity.

Still there are others who decide that in the Old Testament, God was an angry God who delighted in punishing the disobedience of man. They argue that Jesus came in the New Testament with a different gospel that allows men and women to do what is right in their own eyes. No rules, just grace.

Despite the reason one chooses to disregard obedience, the consequences are the same. Disobedience can take us down some dark paths and actually railroad the plans and purposes of God in our lives. Can we remember a time when we were given instructions by our parents, and we reaped the consequences of our shortcomings?

Over the next few weeks, we will cover some key concepts about God’s law and the importance of obedience. It is my prayer that as we take this journey, we would gain insight for truly walking in the manner God has set for his children.

PRAYER: Lord, I know that I have denied the importance of obedience in my walk with you. Over the next few weeks, open my ears to hear what you are truly saying to me. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
