3RD COMMANDMENT

Exodus 20: 7

Inspired by the sermons of an anonymous pastor who served in ministry at Windsor Forest in the 1960’s.

This commandment deals with how we communicate about God to others. It calls us to not be degrading or disrespectful to God. We must show respect to God. We must be mindful of not using God’s name in profanity and slang. When we do this, we defile the name of God.

My brother takes this a bit further and says, “when we take the name Christian, we take God’s name. This means that we are obligated to hold it up and to hold it sacred by wearing it in a way that will honor it. That means that every sin, every fit of temper, every vile word, dishonest act, every filthy thought, every selfish and unChristlike attitude, every questionable habit in the life of a Christian dishonors the name of Christ and the name of God.”

PRAYER: Lord, I want to honor your name in all I say and do. Let me never be dishonoring to you by my words, actions, or deeds. When I fall short, let me not be slow to confess it before you and those I have harmed. Let me always be mindful that I wear your name. That is a great honor, so let me treat it that way. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
