In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.’

Isaiah 38:1

The Word of God declares that in those days King Hezekiah was sick and near death. Here we have Hezekiah who opened the temple doors and repaired them. He brought the Levites together and ordered them to sanctify themselves and the temple when it had been neglected. It was Hezekiah who sent invitations throughout Judah and Israel for the Passover celebration in Jerusalem.

It was Hezekiah who led the people to destroy the high places and altars. It was Hezekiah who broke the pillars and cut down the Asherim throughout Judah and Benjamin. Hezekiah even smashed the bronze serpent that Moses had made that had become the object of worship. But the word of the Lord said that in those days he became sick and near death.

If we could write the story of our lives, many of us would be in this same situation. It was me who prayed to you. It was me who came and cleaned up the church. It was me who praised you when all was going wrong. Why is this bad thing happening to me?

PRAYER: Lord, let me not judge my situation by what occurs in the middle of the story. Give me the insight to look beyond what is going on now, to what you are doing. Let me learn to trust you, even when it is uncomfortable. Let me learn to trust your love for me. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
