Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”
1 Kings 17:13-14 (NKJV)
After the widow tells Elijah that she’s going home to prepare to die, he tells her to take the sticks she has gathered and prepare him something to drink and something to eat. The prophet then declares what God had told him. He tells the widow that her flour will not be used up, and her oil will not run dry until the drought ends. But first he tells her she has no need to fear.
God speaks to us in various ways. Sometimes it’s in a “knowing” or in a still small voice – while we’re taking a walk, when we’re meditating on his Word, or during our praise and worship time. Sometimes we hear his voice through others. When He speaks, his message doesn’t always make sense. The prophet knew what he was telling this woman was out of the ordinary. Maybe that’s why he told her not to be afraid. The prophet knew that fear is crippling and can block our blessings.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, my ears and heart are open to you. Speak to me as only you can. When what you say to me doesn’t seem to make sense, help me to see my world and situations through your eyes. I don’t want fear to cripple me. I don’t want to block my blessings. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
