1ST COMMANDMENT
Exodus 20:3
Inspired by the sermons of an anonymous pastor who served in ministry at Windsor Forest in the 1960’s.
It makes sense to begin with this commandment—no other gods before him. God wants to be God to us. My brother writes that the root of the overwhelming problems we face is due to our failure to put the Ten Commandments in its proper place. If that is what he saw in the 1960’s, can you imagine where we stand today? He goes on to write, “An important segment of the world’s population denies the existence of God and is trying to wipe out every sign of religion.” What are we to do?
This 1st Commandment states that we are to have no other gods before the true and living God. This means no one comes before God. Here are a few points to ponder:
Neither the state, nor a man, nor anything or anybody comes before our God.
God, Jehovah, stands alone as the Supreme Being, the Creator and Ruler of the world.
This law intends that all shall worship Jehovah God and Him alone.
To Him is due supreme and absolute obedience. Man has no right to put his own will ahead of God
My brother summarizes his writing by saying, “How can we deny God the first place in our hearts? How can we fail to worship Him and Him alone? He is the only God. He supplies our every need. He has died for us in Jesus Christ, His Son. Will you not now trust in Him through Jesus Christ His Son and be saved?” There is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. Christians, let us look with new adoration, gratitude and whole-hearted devotion to Him who reminds us, ‘Thou shall have no other gods before me.’”
PRAYER: Lord, I thank you for this commandment. This is the foundation of all other commandments. You are God, and everything else pales in comparison to you. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
