Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man!
2 Samuel 12:7a
God knew David had not dealt with his sin, so Nathan went to David with a riddle that demonstrated how David sinned. Somehow, David found a way to compartmentalize his sins. Nathan told him that there was a rich man (David) who had a lot of sheep and cattle and a poor man (Uriah) who had nothing but one little ewe lamb. He raised this ewe lamb, and it grew up. It shared his food, drank from his cup, and slept in his arms—just like a daughter. A traveler came to the rich man, and the rich man prepared a meal for him. Instead of taking one of his many sheep or cattle, he prepared a meal for the traveler from the poor man’s ewe lamb. When David heard this story, he became indignant because of how the poor man was treated. Nathan used the story to get David to see himself in this sinful plot. He ended it with “you are that man.”
How many times have we compartmentalized or rationalized our sin? How many times have we come up with reasons regarding why our sin is not as bad as someone else’s sin? We can go to church on one hand, but not allow the Lord to deal with our sins on the next.
PRAYER: Lord, give me the courage to face who I really am. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen
