Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”

Kings 17:13-14 (NKJV)

The woman of Zarephath was a woman in great need. Elijah’s directive was truly a test of her faith. Yes, both she and Elijah knew what she had in her hands. She had just enough for herself and her son. She was told to make some food for the man of God anyway – to use the last of what she had for him. The prophet promised the widowed woman that the jar of flour would not run out. In addition, the jug of oil would not be empty until the Lord sent rain again to replenish the earth.

Has your faith ever been tested? Has God ever asked you to do something that seemed crazy? Have you been asked to give your last? How did you respond to his directive? How should you have responded? Sometimes tests come to give us an opportunity to prove that we believe what we say we believe. Tests also come our way to strengthen us and build our faith.

PRAYER: Father, I know that life comes with tests. I want to be strong when trials come my way. I want to demonstrate my beliefs through my actions. I depend on you when I don’t understand the what’s, the why’s, or the how’s. I know that faith can move mountains. I want my faith to be unshakable. Please strengthen me. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
