In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.’

Isaiah 38:1

There is a prepositional phrase that gives context to Hezekiah’s bad news. It states, “in those days.” That means that in his life, there were times that he was strong. In his life, there were times when he was healthy. In his life, there were times when he did not have a care in the world. But the text clearly states that this is only a season.

Do you remember being young and how long it seemed to get from one birthday to the next? Do you remember how long it felt to get from one Christmas to the next? Those years seemed long. Now, look back at your younger adult life. Don’t those years seem like a few days? Most of my adult life, my husband and I have moved from house to house. We have lived in 6 different homes in the same city over the course of nearly 35 years. Even though we lived in each home for an average of 5 years, those years seem like days now. I say all of this to tell you, it is only a season.

PRAYER: Lord, let me learn to navigate the seasons of my life with your grace. Let me not allow one bad season to taint the other seasons, and let me not always expect the good seasons. Let me know and understand that despite the season, you are with me. Thank you for your presence in every season. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
