2ND COMMANDMENT
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me
Exodus 20:4-5
Inspired by the sermons of an anonymous pastor who served in ministry at Windsor Forest in the 1960’s.
The 2nd Commandment is a companion to the first. It is concerned with how we worship God. It tells us that nothing shall stand in the place of God, no form or image shall represent God in worship. God is a jealous God. God’s jealousy is not little, mean, or ugly but founded on truth or principle that God is the Husband of the bride of Christ. He is jealous and loves his wife and cannot share the love of his wife with another. His jealousy includes compassionate concern for the spiritual life of His people.
God has forbidden the worship of things or bowing down before them in the name of worshiping him. Here are a few reminders:
God is a Spirit.
Jesus is the express image of God.
True worshippers must worship in Spirit and in truth.
This means worshiping God in our hearts, minds, and souls.
This also means worshiping with sincere hearts. God is not moved with our lip service. He is not moved by beautiful ceremonies that do not express the sincere feelings of the heart.
PRAYER: Lord, teach me how to worship you in Spirit and in truth. I want you to be pleased with my worship. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
